Google Maps Uses AI to Anticipate Traffic Congestion
Google Maps has developed a capability that allows it to predict traffic congestion with remarkable accuracy, using information from smartphones. This feature alerts drivers to heavy traffic and suggests alternate routes to save time during commutes.
The primary method employed by Google Maps for traffic prediction is called crowdsourcing. By utilizing the collective data from thousands of smartphones, Google can ascertain traffic conditions without the need for cameras on the roads. When users have the app open or running in the background, their smartphones continuously send anonymized GPS data to Google’s servers.
This data includes each user’s exact location and speed. By analyzing this information alongside data from other drivers on the same road, the algorithm creates a real-time traffic map. When the average speed of vehicles drops significantly on a stretch of highway, Google Maps quickly identifies a slowdown or traffic jam and alerts users by changing the route line from blue to orange, and then to red.
Detecting a slowdown is one challenge, but finding the ideal detour in a split second is another. To achieve this, Google relies on its algorithms and extensive historical traffic data. The app does not merely observe current traffic; it uses past traffic patterns to anticipate how congestion will evolve in the near future.
To recommend a new route, the algorithm divides the geographical area into numerous small segments. It calculates the travel time for each alternative route, taking into account speed limits, road types, and traffic signals. If the estimated time on the best alternative route is less than the time lost on the main route, Google Maps will automatically suggest a change in direction.
Users, often unaware, contribute to a vast collaborative map managed by artificial intelligence.
