NVIDIA raises price by 50 percent, Norway may be next
NVIDIA has announced a price increase for its Shield TV Pro in the United States, raising the cost from 199.99 dollars to 299.99 dollars, representing a 50 percent increase on a streaming device that is seven years old but still well-liked. This new price will take effect starting October 2.
The company attributes this price hike to significantly increased component costs, particularly for RAM, amid a booming artificial intelligence sector. NVIDIA has confirmed that the rising costs of components, including memory, have affected the entire industry.
This trend has already impacted much more expensive products, as the AI boom has led to a global memory crisis that could affect both PlayStation 6 and other consumer products. Additionally, prices for the NVIDIA RTX 5090 have skyrocketed due to heavy hardware purchases for AI systems. NVIDIA is one of the biggest beneficiaries of the AI race, yet the pressure on RAM and other components is also impacting its consumer products.
The current Nvidia Shield TV Pro, launched in 2019, features a Tegra X1+ processor, 3 GB of RAM, and 16 GB of storage. It supports 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, Plex Media Server, and AI-based image upscaling. Despite its age, NVIDIA has continued to produce and update the device, with significant updates being provided to Shield owners even years after its launch.
In Norway, the price remains significantly lower, with Pricejakt.no reporting the Nvidia Shield TV Pro available for 2490 kroner at Komplett. This price has remained relatively stable over recent months, with a recorded lowest price of 2349 kroner and a highest price of 2490 kroner. Norwegian buyers currently avoid the American price increase of 100 dollars, but it is uncertain if prices will rise in Norway in the future.
Meanwhile, the PlayStation 5 and especially the PlayStation 5 Pro have become noticeably more expensive, with the PS5 Pro now costing around 11,000 kroner in Norway and being difficult to acquire.
