Korean Foundation Confirms Possible Data Breach
The Korean Foundation has confirmed the possibility of personal data leakage due to an external hacking attack targeting its mass mailing system. An investigation has been initiated in collaboration with relevant authorities.
On October 22, the foundation posted a notice on its website regarding the 'personal data leakage situation,' explaining that a security vulnerability was exploited on July 29, which was later confirmed on October 19.
The targeted system is used for promoting various events and projects, containing personal information such as email addresses, names, and phone numbers. Concerns about secondary damage from potential information leakage have been raised.
As of now, specific details regarding the actual leaked personal information and the scale of damage have not been confirmed. The foundation is conducting a thorough investigation with relevant authorities to understand the breach's context, the leakage status, and the precise extent of the damage.
Although the external attack occurred on July 29, the foundation only recognized the breach approximately three months later, on October 19. This indicates a significant delay in detecting the breach. However, further investigation is required to determine the actual data leakage timeline and the duration of the hacker's access to the system.
Immediately after confirming the breach, the foundation disabled access to the compromised system and reported the incident to relevant authorities, implementing security measures to prevent additional damage.
The foundation has urged users to be particularly cautious, warning that leaked information could lead to phishing emails, spam messages, and impersonation calls. Users are advised not to click on links from unknown sources or respond to requests for passwords, authentication codes, or money.
