European AI companies reject development slowdown

Several European AI companies oppose American calls to slow down the development of artificial intelligence, reports Reuters. Anthropics CEO Dario Amodei has urged leading AI firms to reduce the pace of developing increasingly powerful models. Among other things, he wants companies to collaborate on common safety measures without risking violations of competition law.

He has received support from Open AI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. French Mistral AI now accuses leading American players of using the safety debate to strengthen their own market positions by pushing for regulations that favor them over competitors. France's Finance Minister Roland Lescure also states that there is a clear self-interest in leading companies wanting competitors to slow down.

Swiss Proton and German Black Forest Labs have shared similar criticism. French Hugging Face founder Clément Delangeu believes the industry needs to accelerate rather than slow down, although he supports Amodei's proposal for independent reviews of AI companies.
