September Patch Tuesday causes bugs

Multiple bugs have been reported following the installation of the update, affecting notably Windows 11, remote connections, audio, and Excel.

The latest security update for Windows 11 encounters several problems. After releasing its Patch Tuesday on September 8, Microsoft corrected over one hundred security vulnerabilities and made several improvements to its operating system. However, the fix also led to its share of bugs, impacting Windows 11 as well as certain applications and functionalities within the Microsoft ecosystem. Among the most critical incidents are malfunctions affecting Remote Desktop Services. In some cases, users experience difficulties in establishing or maintaining a remote session after installing the security patches. Microsoft has also identified issues affecting file sharing between Windows and Linux virtual machines running under Hyper-V.

Certain USB audio devices are also affected, particularly those relying on USB Audio 1.0 standard. Users have reported audio playback issues, especially on configurations utilizing multiple audio channels. Microsoft acknowledged the problem and stated that emergency patches released in mid-September restore the normal functioning of the affected devices.

The series of problems does not stop at the operating system. Microsoft has also confirmed a regression affecting several versions of Excel, including the 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2024 editions. The bug concerns the copy-paste function. After installing the September updates, certain operations may fail without any error message being displayed. The user initiates the command, but the selected content is ultimately not pasted into the destination cell. Microsoft has deployed patch 5002665, but it currently covers only a portion of users, particularly those using Excel 2016. While waiting for a more widely available fix, the company recommends temporarily using the "Special Paste" function when the standard copy-paste does not work.

Other anomalies related to the September Patch Tuesday continue to be reported by users. Reported issues include black screens after logging into Windows, malfunctions of the File History backup tool, and stability problems on certain configurations equipped with AMD Radeon graphics cards.
