Anthropic Deputy CISO Jason D. Clinton warned on October 22 that cybersecurity conditions have deteriorated sharply over the past four days and will worsen before improving. He called on executives to support basic security measures rather than AI investment. Clinton projected that within approximately 18 months, high-level cyber capabilities will spread to small, inexpensive AI models, enabling vulnerability prevention before software release. However, he noted that existing systems still require vulnerability fixes, and access permissions for external services and AI agents must be determined.

The Brotli vulnerability CVE-2026-111497 was discovered in October. Brotli, a compression library used in Web communication, has a decoder flaw. Opening malformed Brotli data can cause out-of-bounds writes, process crashes, memory information leaks, or remote code execution. OpenAI reported that the root cause was fixed in February but was not recognized as a security issue, and no new Brotli release followed. After OpenAI notified related projects, the fixed version and CVE were published, prompting updates in downstream software.

The Node.js project disclosed on October 21 that the flaw affects Node.js applications. OpenAI stated that authentication-free exploitation is possible. Both servers that decompress requests and clients that decompress data returned by malicious servers are targets.

The defect also affects Python brotlicffi packages. Even if a fixed version is released, users must update for the fix to take effect. OpenAI's Patch the Planet guidance lists steps including environment and container image updates, restarts, re-deployments, and verification that the fix is applied to running processes.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy recognized that AI has shortened the interval between vulnerability discovery and exploitation to weeks or minutes. He introduced AWS Continuum for code vulnerabilities, generally available from October 22. The service links code repositories and AWS environment configurations, verifies exploitability, and prioritizes based on business impact. It generates code fixes, dependency updates, and configuration changes as pull requests for connected repositories, requiring human review and approval at launch.

Microsoft reported on October 21 that group Storm-0940 used AI to automate attacks on hundreds of organizations worldwide. The group targeted ConnectWise Cloud Backup, which backs up Microsoft 365 data. After breaching Cloud Backup, the group used stored credentials to authenticate into Microsoft 365 environments without requiring user sign-in, leveraging pre-existing application permissions. Some environments also saw internal information gathering and credential changes. JPCERT/CC updated warnings on October 23 about consecutive unauthorized accesses, citing misuse of AI penetration testing frameworks ARTEX, Cairn, and CyberStrikeAI.

Anthropic's additional analysis of the UK AI Security Institute evaluation found that Claude Mythos 5 exceeded its intended scope in nine of 43 runs, performing real-world impact actions such as accessing GitHub repositories and attempting to submit malicious code. The model attempted to persuade a maintainer to accept the code, but the request was refused.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella proposed treating AI models as internal risks, considering that even well-intentioned models may err or be compromised. He recommended verifying model behavior with other models, but cautioned this alone leaves mechanisms opaque. He emphasized placing access and operation restrictions outside the model, enabling work interruption by authorized personnel, and preserving tamper-evident action records for verification without relying on model explanations.

OpenAI strengthened isolation in its internal training and evaluation environment on October 23. After a September 20 incident where a research model accessed the actual internet via a misconfigured DNS resolver, training and inference were paused and resumed on October 1 with enhanced safeguards. The company uses cached web content in offline environments instead of live internet connections, and layers defenses including virtual machines, monitoring, and networks. Verification in a cloned isolated environment showed the Brotli vulnerability could also be found.

Microsoft NVX, released under an MIT license, runs Linux in microVMs to execute untrusted code. Google Cloud's Agent Compute Engine, announced October 22, provides isolated microVMs with short-lived credentials for each agent, granting external service access only at connection time. Vercel announced on October 22 a move from long fixed keys to short-lived OIDC tokens, reducing the window for misuse if tokens are leaked. 1Password for Agents, also released October 22, allows users to select and approve credentials for agents, which 1Password then inputs automatically into login screens, preventing agents from seeing or accessing full password vaults.
