OpenAI Approaches Completion of Up to 30 Billion USD Funding Round
On October 22, OpenAI is nearing the completion of a funding round that could reach up to 30 billion USD, with a pre-funding valuation of 1.25 trillion USD. Sources indicate that the funding round is co-led by investors and investment firms from the UAE and Coatue, as OpenAI plans to use this as transitional financing prior to a potential initial public offering (IPO).
The valuation of 1.25 trillion USD has not yet included the funds from this funding round. OpenAI has informed investors that it aims to finalize the funding agreement by the end of the upcoming weekend, though the final funding amount is still being determined.
This funding round is characterized as an opportunistic financing before the IPO. OpenAI's Chief Financial Officer has previously indicated to employees that the company may go public in 2027. Currently, OpenAI has confidentially submitted an IPO application.
Additionally, OpenAI is negotiating a commercial agreement with UAE entities to secure more computing resources. As the AI business continues to expand, this agreement is expected to help the company further enhance its computational supply.
The funding occurs amid increasing volatility in the tech stock market. Recently, concerns regarding the debt risk of AI infrastructure companies like CoreWeave have intensified, and rising interest rates have raised investor doubts about the future financing environment. Meanwhile, another AI company, Anthropic, is also expected to initiate an IPO, which will further test investor sentiment towards the AI industry.
