Nvidia is reportedly considering acquiring Reflection AI, an American startup focused on developing open-weight AI models. These models are gaining popularity due to their lower costs compared to closed alternatives, and Reflection AI aims to compete in this market segment against Chinese companies.

Negotiations between Nvidia and Reflection AI are in the early stages, with the potential deal possibly taking several forms, including an investment increase or a full acquisition. Nvidia has already invested $800 million in Reflection AI, making it one of the largest shareholders in the company. The startup's valuation reached $25 billion earlier this year.

The discussions come amid rising costs for companies utilizing closed AI models, prompting many to explore open-source options actively promoted by developers in China. Nvidia's interest in acquiring Reflection AI aligns with its efforts to strengthen its presence in the open-weight model sector, where it has existing developments but lacks leading proprietary AI models.

Nvidia's founder has advocated for the creation of a national ecosystem for open-weight models, emphasizing the need for innovation and prosperity. The company recently acquired Hugging Face for nearly $13 billion, showcasing its strategy to capitalize on the ongoing AI boom by targeting promising startups. Nvidia's market capitalization is steadily approaching $6 trillion.

Reflection AI recently introduced its open-weight model, Beam, which claims to outperform leading Western open-source models while consuming significantly less computational resources during inference. The startup has gained attention due to collaborations with the Pentagon and agreements with geopolitical allies of the United States, such as South Korea.

Both Nvidia and Reflection AI declined to comment on the ongoing negotiations, which could lead to a deal in the coming weeks.
