Anthropic IPO faces valuation uncertainty amid market downturn
On November 6, Anthropic's initial public offering (IPO) is reportedly facing challenges due to a significant decline in the U.S. stock market. According to sources, major investors are increasingly doubtful that Anthropic can achieve its expected valuation of $1.5 trillion following substantial market losses and the unwinding of AI-related investments.
Anthropic had planned to initiate its IPO in the week before Thanksgiving, with the potential to raise $100 billion. However, three key investors involved in the IPO indicated that the valuation may need to be revised downwards, with one suggesting it could be closer to $1 trillion.
Another investor noted that even if the market rebounds, it may be difficult to convince institutional investors, who recently suffered losses, to take on significant risks in the AI sector again. This investor also raised the possibility that Anthropic may consider delaying its IPO.
Anthropic's alternative option could involve raising less funds than anticipated through the IPO. As of September 30, Anthropic held $146.6 billion in cash.
Investor anticipation for this IPO has been high for months. Many view Anthropic as a "must-buy" despite the volatility of other AI-related stocks. Given the scale of the IPO plan and Anthropic's close ties with major tech firms such as Google, Amazon, and NVIDIA, the company's listing could have significant implications for the broader market and economy.
In the coming days, Anthropic executives and their advisors are expected to hold meetings to discuss the IPO strategy, while they have been careful to avoid making specific commitments during the preparation phase to maintain flexibility.
