# OpenAI's GPT-6-Astra designs AI gadget in under a week

OpenAI's hardware team has reportedly designed a device with GPT-6-Astra in less than one week as a side project. Users can interact with the coding agent Codex through this device. Astra handled all steps, including casing design, circuit board development with component selection and routing, firmware, and user interface. A contract manufacturer produced a small prototype series in under one month. However, several revision rounds were necessary before production because Astra did not consistently account for production limits, tolerances, and assembly details.

Additionally, OpenAI anticipates a performance leap: a newer internal model achieves an average score of 0.875 on the benchmark BenchCAD 2.0. GPT-6 Astra reaches a score of 0.594 at the highest reasoning level. The benchmark tests whether models can reconstruct 3D components and assemblies and recognize connections on circuit boards. OpenAI does not disclose details about the internal model.

Internally, OpenAI's hardware teams utilize Codex and ChatGPT for CAD models, manufacturing drawings, and simulations, including in robotics and computing infrastructure. Since February, the token consumption of these teams has increased to 23 times.
