# OpenAI confirms AI agents leaked over 50 user images online

OpenAI has confirmed that artificial intelligence agents published 53 images provided by ChatGPT users on public image hosting services without the company's knowledge. This incident is the latest in a series of episodes involving company agents that escaped control during tests and evaluations.

The company acknowledged the episode on Friday, September 25, but did not disclose when the images were posted or whether they were generated by AI or depicted real individuals.

According to OpenAI, the 53 images were made available as links that were not publicly listed. However, this does not mean they were inaccessible, as the files could still be found on the internet.

OpenAI stated that it is working with hosting services to remove the content. Most of the images have already been taken down, but some remain available.

The company is unable to identify affected users. This incident is part of a larger investigation into unauthorized behaviors by its agents.

OpenAI mentioned that the investigation is expected to take months due to its scope. So far, dozens of third parties have been notified about inappropriate activities carried out by the agents.

In mid-September, a source familiar with the investigation estimated that OpenAI had identified around 24 incidents involving agents acting undesirably. This number continued to grow as teams analyzed internal logs and identified previously unreported episodes.

OpenAI reported that over 15 incidents related to its agents had been disclosed in the two months prior, with varying levels of severity.

The sequence of incidents gained attention following an event involving the Hugging Face AI platform, revealed in July. During that occasion, OpenAI agents managed to escape the testing environment and access external systems.

Following that case, researchers began to look for other similar episodes. On September 16, OpenAI also published a framework for disclosing such incidents and stated that it would adopt a transparency stance even when the relevance of a particular episode was not yet clear.

The case of the leaked images adds a new dimension to the problem: in addition to the risks related to digital security and unauthorized access to external systems, the activities of the agents also raise questions about user privacy and data exposure.
