# OpenAI acquires Glass Imaging for $300 million

OpenAI has reportedly acquired Glass Imaging, a startup focused on improving smartphone camera quality through AI technology, for $300 million. The acquisition was disclosed on September 14, 2026, by the Wall Street Journal.

Glass Imaging's valuation in this acquisition exceeds $300 million, a significant increase from its previous valuation of $100 million a year ago during its funding round. The startup raised $30 million from investors including GV and Insight Partners.

Founded in 2019 by former Apple employees, Glass Imaging aims to develop new imaging technology that combines hardware and software. The core technology integrates AI with camera hardware to achieve image quality comparable to large DSLR cameras, optimizing sensor and imaging software instead of relying solely on adding multiple cameras.

The specific objectives and plans for utilizing this technology following the acquisition have not yet been disclosed. However, this acquisition aligns with OpenAI's broader strategy of building a consumer hardware ecosystem beyond AI model development.
