# NVIDIA Discusses Investment or Acquisition of Reflection AI

NVIDIA is reportedly discussing additional investment or acquisition of the American open-source startup Reflection AI. Sources cited by Financial Times on October 10 reported that negotiations are in the early stages, with a possibility of reaching an agreement in the coming weeks, though discussions could also collapse.

The transaction method has not yet been finalized. However, it is believed that NVIDIA may pursue an 'acqui-hire' strategy, which involves hiring key personnel and securing technology licenses instead of fully acquiring Reflection AI. This approach could help avoid the complex regulatory scrutiny associated with a complete acquisition.

Alternative arrangements may include further equity investments or contracts to provide semiconductor and computing resources. Nevertheless, NVIDIA faces legal risks, as seen when it pursued a similar acqui-hire strategy with chip designer Groq last December, which resulted in lawsuits from employees.

NVIDIA is already a major shareholder in Reflection AI, having invested 800 million dollars. The company has received support from Sequoia Capital, Disruptive, and 1789 Capital, which is associated with Donald Trump Jr. During its funding round in March, Reflection AI was valued at 25 billion dollars.

Founded in 2024 by Misha Laskin and Ioannis Antoglu, both formerly of Google DeepMind, Reflection AI aims to compete with China's open models. The company has secured large contracts with SpaceX and cloud provider Nebulous to enhance its computing resources and has collaborations with the U.S. Department of Defense and Department of Energy.

On October 5, Reflection AI unveiled its first open-weight model, 'Beam', which specializes in software development and AI agent tasks. The company claims its performance is comparable to China's Z.ai's 'GLM-5.2', although it has yet to achieve cutting-edge performance.

NVIDIA is expanding its investments across the AI ecosystem, particularly in open-source projects. In September, it signed a deal to acquire Hugging Face for 13 billion dollars. CEO Jensen Huang has emphasized the importance of fostering an open model ecosystem while strengthening competitiveness through partnerships with external developers.
