# Neocloud operators face rising costs for data center financing

GPU cloud providers operating under the neocloud model are encountering significant difficulties in raising capital to build new data centers. These companies, which include CoreWeave, IREN, Nscale, Nebius, and Lambda, primarily generate revenue by purchasing large quantities of graphics processing units and leasing them to technology firms. While the sector attracted substantial interest during the initial surge of artificial intelligence adoption, the financial landscape has shifted over the past two to three years. The cumulative value of capital raised by these entities in 2025 and 2026 exceeds one trillion dollars, prompting investors to question whether these companies will generate sufficient revenue to service their massive debt obligations.

Specific challenges are evident across the sector. Lambda reduced the target valuation for its final pre-IPO share sale from 14.5 billion dollars to 13 billion dollars. Nscale, a UK-based provider serving OpenAI, may delay its planned initial public offering from November to December due to unfavorable market conditions. The company also faces potential valuation reductions, with estimates dropping from 35 billion dollars to 30 billion dollars, alongside difficulties in financing a new data center in the United States for client Anthropic. CoreWeave is experiencing increased borrowing costs, as its bonds with a 9.75 percent coupon are trading on the secondary market at a 15 percent yield, nearly doubling the effective cost of debt.

Nebius, a Dutch company formerly the parent of Yandex, has chosen a different approach. Following its separation from Yandex in 2024 after the invasion of Ukraine, Nebius secured investment from NVIDIA and gained clients including Microsoft and Meta. The company has decided against issuing bonds at this time. Instead, it is pursuing alternative funding methods, such as requesting prepayments from clients to improve cash flow. This strategy reflects a broader trend among neoclouds to avoid high-cost debt instruments.

The financial pressure on neoclouds contrasts with the performance of large technology hyperscalers. Alphabet shares fell despite earnings growth, as investors expressed concern over rising expenses. Intel shares dropped 29 percent even though revenue increased by 21 percent. However, these large companies continue to access the bond market successfully because financial institutions have high confidence in their ability to repay debt from diversified revenue streams. Meta recently raised a substantial amount of capital through a share sale valued at 97.5 billion dollars. These major firms also benefit from lower interest rates on their bonds due to higher credit confidence. Consequently, many large technology companies prefer issuing bonds over selling equity, a situation that is the inverse of the challenges faced by neocloud operators.
