# Multiple US military bases experience freezer malfunctions, Pentagon suspects hacking

On October 30, 2026, multiple military bases in the United States reported malfunctions in their food freezing equipment, prompting an investigation by military criminal investigators. This follows similar incidents in Europe attributed to cyberattacks.

Six military bases confirmed that in August, freezers used in on-base supermarkets serving military personnel and their families simultaneously failed. Thomas Hamilton, a spokesperson for the US Army Criminal Investigation Division, stated that the agency is collaborating with other investigators to uncover the full scope of the situation.

Hamilton also mentioned that US investigators are working with French authorities to examine the cooling equipment failures in Europe. The Defense Criminal Investigative Service is leading the inquiry but has declined to comment on the investigation's status or the causes of the malfunctions. Reports indicate that the Pentagon suspects these failures may have been caused by hacking.

Earlier this month, hundreds of supermarkets in France suffered from cyberattacks that disabled their cooling systems, resulting in the disposal of large quantities of spoiled food.

After the hacking incident, the cooling systems were activated into defrost mode, raising temperatures in refrigerators and freezers to 50 degrees Celsius for about six hours, causing meat, frozen foods, and vegetables to become unsellable and necessitating their disposal. In August, during the freezer failures at the military bases, the official Facebook account of Fort Huachuca in Arizona posted photos of empty shelves, declaring, "All frozen food is spoiled." Other military bases also made similar announcements via Facebook.
