# Multiple banks in South Korea suffer data breaches, President orders investigation

On October 4, 2026, multiple banks in South Korea experienced cyberattacks resulting in the leakage of personal information. President Lee Jae-myung has directed relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and develop effective countermeasures regarding these incidents affecting commercial banks and other financial institutions.

The Chief Spokesperson of the Presidential Office, Kang You-jeong, conveyed this directive. Kang You-jeong noted that President Lee Jae-myung received reports about the personal information leaks from financial and public institutions, urging serious attention to the matter and prompt action.

According to information from the financial sector, customers' personal data from banks such as Shinhan Bank, KB Kookmin Bank, Hana Bank, and BNK Busan Bank were compromised, along with attacks on savings banks and loan companies. In the afternoon of the same day, Lee Ik-yeon, Chairman of the Financial Commission, and Lee Chan-jun, head of the Financial Supervisory Service, convened an emergency meeting with CEOs from affected financial companies and the heads of financial institution associations at the central government office in Seoul.

Prior reports indicated that Shinhan Bank's loan agency system had been under attack since September 28, potentially affecting the information of 25,729 customers over three days. KB Kookmin Bank disclosed on September 30 that its mobile business support system had been compromised, resulting in the theft of information from 119 customers. Similarly, Hana Bank reported a data breach affecting 89 customers through its sales support system. BNK Busan Bank discovered that the personal information of 11 outsourced developers was leaked on October 1, while other banks including Woori Bank and NH Nonghyup Bank also detected suspicious external access attempts.
