# Microsoft launches new Surface models featuring Nvidia RTX Spark chip

Microsoft has launched new Surface models that utilize the Nvidia RTX Spark chip, building on an agreement with Nvidia and PC manufacturing partners established in June. The new models emphasize on-device AI processing and are designed to handle AI Agent workloads directly on Windows 11. The flagship model, Surface Laptop Ultra, is available in two variants, with the starting price set at 2,600 United States dollars. The high-performance variant is priced at a maximum of 5,900 United States dollars.

Additionally, Microsoft has introduced a workstation specifically for development, known as the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, which starts at 6,000 United States dollars. This device comes pre-installed with software development tools including VS Code, GitHub Copilot CLI, Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), and PowerShell 7. Both the Surface Laptop Ultra and the Dev Box are designed to run AI models locally without relying on cloud processing, thus avoiding additional computational costs. This is achieved through collaboration between the CPU, GPU, unified memory, and a customized cooling system to support heavy workloads continuously.

The operating system on these devices is the newly updated version of Windows 11, which includes important features such as Execution Containers. This feature facilitates easier, safer, and more efficient sandboxing for AI Agents. Microsoft’s CEO confirmed that this functionality will be made available to all Windows 11 users.

The launch indicates a competitive move to capture the software developer and AI user market share from macOS. Microsoft has also introduced a trade-in campaign offering discounts up to 1,000 United States dollars for users who trade in a MacBook Pro to purchase the new Surface models. The graphic performance of the devices supports video editing, content creation, and high-level processing capabilities effectively.

Moreover, the Nvidia RTX Spark chip is not limited to Microsoft's hardware, as partners like Dell have revealed details about the Dell XPS 16 Creator Edition, which also uses this chip, priced at 3,800 United States dollars and available for pre-order through Best Buy with delivery expected by the end of October.
