# Microsoft launches Maia 300 chip for AI acceleration

Microsoft has launched the Maia 300 chip, the third generation of its AI acceleration technology, based on a Chiplet architecture. This follows the earlier releases of Maia 100 in 2023 and Maia 200 in early 2026, which are now utilized in production services such as Copilot. The Maia 300 is an upgrade from the Maia 200, capable of generating tokens seven times more than its predecessor while being more energy efficient, achieving a 40% improvement in tokens per megawatt compared to GPU usage.

The architecture of Maia 200, referred to as Software Defined Locally Accessed Dataflow Architecture (SDLA), was designed to improve the efficiency of data movement in modern AI systems. It separates the control path from the data path, allowing software to manage data positioning more effectively. The Maia 300 advances this architecture to better handle long-context issues, reasoning-heavy models, and decode-heavy model operations.

The Maia 300 employs multiple chiplets arranged with non-uniform memory access (NUMA) memory located nearby to optimize data access. It uses a new low precision data format, MXFP4, which reduces memory usage and data movement, enabling the running of larger models with longer contexts. Additionally, it features HBM4 RAM, increasing memory bandwidth to 18 terabytes per second, which is 2.5 times greater than the 7.1 terabytes per second provided by HBM3E.

These advancements allow for greater density in racks, with the ability to fit twice as many Maia chips, 96 instead of 48, within the same power capacity of 167 kilowatts. Overall, the Maia 300 produces tokens seven times more than the Maia 200 when considering the entire rack, and improves performance per watt by 2.5 times. The Maia 300 is expected to be operational in 2027.
