# Meta and Microsoft drastically reduce Claude usage and focus on own AI tools

Meta and Microsoft, two of the largest corporate clients of Anthropic, are cutting back on the internal usage of the AI assistant Claude. At Microsoft, expenses for Claude were reportedly projected to exceed one billion dollar annually. Executives instructed employees to instead utilize in-house tools such as GitHub Copilot and models from OpenAI. The expenses have been lowered by more than one third, with the monthly budget per employee in the cloud sector reduced from 100,000 dollar to around 10,000 dollar.

At Meta, the number of Claude code users has dropped from approximately 60,000 to 30,000, partly due to layoffs and partly because Meta is advancing its own AI coding tools like Muse Code and MetaCode. Within just a 28-day period, Meta spent more than 105 million dollar on Claude Code. Meta had already implemented AI cost-saving measures in June.

The motivations are varied: on one hand, it likely relates to pure cost efficiency, similar to other companies. On the other hand, Meta may not wish to further strengthen Anthropic while aiming to place its own products in this segment. Additionally, Anthropic has grown extremely quickly and may be causing headaches for some established companies, including Microsoft, as tools like Claude Cowork and ChatGPT Work increasingly become substitutes for Office.
