# G7 approves frontier AI cyberattack drills amid rising threats

The G7 has approved frontier AI cyberattack drills to test financial system defenses. The drills will involve G7 finance ministries and central banks constructing AI based attack scenarios and evaluating response procedures. Japan's finance minister confirmed the plan at a Bangkok meeting held alongside the IMF annual meeting. The simulations may include private financial institutions. The initiative responds to growing concerns about AI powered cyber threats to global financial stability. The IMF recently identified AI driven cybercrime as a major risk to financial stability.

The IMF warned that serious cyber incidents can erode market trust and disrupt core financial infrastructure. Even without direct monetary loss service disruptions can trigger systemic crises. Vulnerability exploitation is accelerating with over 70 percent of attacks occurring on the same day as disclosure or earlier in 2026. This marks a significant increase from 2025 and a sharp rise from 2018 levels. Financial institutions' reliance on external service providers creates cascading failure risks. State sponsored attackers also pose growing threats.

Dutch Finance Minister Elke Heinen stressed the need for international cooperation. She noted shared visibility into risks while highlighting the difficulty of effective response. The UK is strengthening financial sector cyber defenses. Bank of England Deputy Governor Sarah Bradden said existing defenses cannot be assumed safe. The FSB also discussed AI risks during the Bangkok meeting. FSB Chair Andrew Bailey called for faster and stronger responses including expanded model testing and stricter safety standards.
