# Five major banks in South Korea attacked by hackers

On October 3, 2026, five major banks in South Korea were reportedly attacked by hackers, believed to be driven by artificial intelligence. This incident marks the first time that all five banks have been simultaneously targeted in the financial sector.

Following Shinhan Bank, KB Kookmin Bank and Hana Bank also experienced similar attacks, which resulted in customer information leaks. BNK Busan Bank reported that personal information of 11 outsourced employees was compromised due to the hacking incident.

KB Kookmin Bank stated that 119 customers had their information leaked, including names, phone numbers, addresses, and encrypted identification numbers. Each customer's leaked information varied. The attack targeted the employees' dedicated mobile office support system and was not related to online banking or mobile banking transactions.

Hana Bank also confirmed that 89 customers had their information leaked due to the intrusion, which included identification numbers, names, addresses, emails, phone numbers, and workplaces. The breach was attributed to external hackers illegally accessing their operational support system. This system operates independently from online and mobile banking transaction systems, and it has been verified that no financial transaction information was involved.

Previously, Shinhan Bank experienced a similar attack, affecting approximately 25,000 customers and causing leaks of information such as customer names, phone numbers, associated information, annual income, and loan amounts. Other banks, including Woori Bank and NH Nonghyup Bank, faced similar hacking attempts, but their intrusion defense systems successfully intercepted those attempts, and no information leaks have been reported so far.
