# Data breach at University of Munich

A data breach occurred at the University of Munich. An unauthorized third party gained access to the IT systems of the university, resulting in a leak of personal data. Students at the university were reportedly informed via email about the incident on September 19, 2026.

The Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, known as LMU, is one of the largest and most prestigious universities in Germany. A blog reader alerted me via email about this data breach and provided the relevant information from the university.

According to the report, an unauthorized attacker managed to access registration data stored in an IT system. Authorities currently have to assume that this data was also retrieved. The categories of data potentially affected by the breach include any personal information provided during the registration process.

Importantly, examination information or specific details about study contents and individual performances are explicitly not affected. The LMU confirmed that any alteration or manipulation of the data was prevented, so the data remains available.

Immediately after the first signs of the breach, the LMU took extensive countermeasures and removed the affected component from the system. The final technical and forensic investigation of the attack is still ongoing and is being conducted in close collaboration with the relevant investigative and supervisory authorities. As of now, there is no evidence that the attacker has published the obtained dataset or intends to misuse it.
