# Companies' Biggest Security Vulnerability: Administrator Accounts Under Threat

Administrator accounts, which provide single-point access to all digital assets from user permissions to security firewalls and backup systems in corporate networks, are becoming the primary target for cyber attackers. The compromise of a single authorized account jeopardizes the control of a company's entire infrastructure; phishing attacks, unrevoked access from former employees, and malicious insider attempts pose significant risks. Experts warn that focusing on external threats while insufficiently auditing privileged accounts inside can lead to catastrophic consequences.

In a recent case announced by the U.S. Department of Justice, it was revealed that an infrastructure engineer of a company planned to lock access to hundreds of servers and thousands of computers by using his administrator privileges, subsequently demanding approximately 750,000 dollars from the company. This and similar incidents clearly highlight the importance of internal security, according to Alev Akkoyunlu, Operations Director of Laykon Bilişim, the distributor of Bitdefender in Turkey, who notes that authorized accounts can render traditional defense mechanisms completely ineffective.

Akkoyunlu states that companies allocate a significant portion of their security budgets to prevent external attacks, emphasizing, “For someone who infiltrates using an authorized account, most standard defense mechanisms are rendered ineffective. In recent cases, we see that attackers do not even need malicious software. Tools like remote desktop connections and scheduled tasks, when used by a malicious authorized individual, can have a destructive impact similar to ransomware. The failure to review administrator privileges for years and the lack of monitoring of these accounts is a significant vulnerability. Protecting these accounts directly means safeguarding business continuity.”
