# Brax unveils Wink smartphone with physical keyboard and privacy switch

Brax has introduced the Wink, a modular smartphone designed to prioritize user privacy through a physical switch and a custom operating system. The device features a physical QWERTY keyboard and a 4-inch display on its front panel. Users can swipe across the keyboard to scroll through content. The modular design allows the lower half of the device to be replaced with a larger battery or removed entirely if the keyboard is not desired. A side switch disables the mobile network, microphones, camera, location services, and other sensors simultaneously. Users can configure which specific services are affected by this switch within the software. The phone runs BraxOS, a modified version of Android with all Google software removed.

This configuration eliminates the need for a Google account and prevents behavioral tracking. Brax has made the source code for this operating system publicly available. The device includes features for data protection, allowing users to wipe all data upon startup, after multiple failed password attempts, or via a forced code. This forced code is intended for use in situations where a user is compelled to unlock the device. Encrypted calls and messages are supported, but this functionality requires the other party to also possess a Brax device. The hardware includes a MediaTek MT8875 chip, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. The chip is designed for Internet of Things devices rather than smartphones, but it is supported until 2032, which aligns with the update period Brax provides.

The phone features a 50 MP camera, a headphone jack, and SD card expansion. It lacks a selfie camera and a fingerprint scanner. The battery size has not yet been disclosed. The pre-sale price for the Wink is 480 euros, with a final retail price of 700 euros. The first batch of devices is expected to ship in July 2027. The company also sells the BraX3, another privacy-focused smartphone, for 389 euros. Brax is currently developing a privacy-friendly tablet.
