The incident occurred on Thursday and lasted approximately 20 minutes. Experts have identified this as the largest criminal action ever recorded in the sector. The exchange temporarily suspended withdrawals while assuring that customer funds are protected and that it will cover all losses. The breach raised questions about the security of such platforms and triggered a drop in the price of major cryptocurrencies on Friday. Initial investigations by Binance pointed to the intrusion of one of its engineers' computers as the entry point for the criminals. The company subsequently identified other security flaws that may have also been exploited. According to TRM Labs, a US company specializing in tracking cryptocurrency movements, the hackers compromised the system responsible for authorizing transfers. The majority of the diversion was concentrated around 5 p.m. Brasília time, according to transaction records analyzed by experts. After the theft, the criminals began moving the funds rapidly to hinder blocking and tracking of the values. Binance stated it has located approximately $3 billion in stolen cryptocurrencies. The status of the remaining $3.3 billion has not yet been fully clarified. Part of the diverted funds was in stablecoins, a type of cryptocurrency developed to maintain a stable price, usually equivalent to the dollar. Unlike Bitcoin, these coins can be blocked by the companies responsible for their issuance, which prevents their movement by criminals, even without representing immediate recovery of the values. Tether reported freezing nearly $1.57 billion. Circle blocked more than $800 million, and Ripple froze approximately $200 million. World Liberty Financial, a company linked to US President Donald Trump and his family, also participated in the blocking actions, according to Reuters. However, cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ether do not have a central company capable of directly blocking transfers. According to TRM Labs, about $2.4 billion in Bitcoin and Ether may be beyond the immediate reach of blocking measures. Experts explain that these resources could only be intercepted in specific situations, such as when criminals attempt to transfer them to an exchange willing to block the operations. TRM Labs and Chainalysis, another US cryptocurrency tracking company, state that the attack presents characteristics similar to those of intrusions attributed to hackers linked to North Korea. One of the most evident similarities is with the 2025 theft from the Bybit exchange, attributed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation to North Korean criminals. TRM Labs considers it possible that the same group is behind the Binance attack. North Korea has been accused for years by US and South Korean authorities of using hacker groups to fund government activities. The country denies the accusations. Binance, for its part, states that its investigation has not yet officially identified the responsible parties. The exchange said it is doing everything it can, in coordination with authorities, to resolve the complex attack. To cover the losses, Binance announced it will use its own resources and an emergency fund known as the Secure Asset Fund for Users. The fund maintains a reserve of approximately $1 billion in Bitcoin, a value much lower than the $6.3 billion diverted. The company says it is working with authorities and partners to investigate the attack and prevent criminals from moving the resources. Withdrawal services are expected to resume within 45 hours, according to an update released by the exchange. The news of the theft had an immediate impact on quotes. Bitcoin, the world's most known cryptocurrency, fell more than 3% to $77,356.60, its lowest value in six weeks. Ether, the second largest cryptocurrency on the market, dropped more than 3% to $2,178, the lowest level in two months. BNB, the cryptocurrency linked to Binance and used for paying fees on the platform, fell 5% in 24 hours to $709.70. The impact also reached the US stock market. Shares of Coinbase, another major cryptocurrency exchange, fell 4.8%. Strategy, a company known for holding large investments in Bitcoin, shares dropped nearly 6% in after-hours trading. Coinbase stated it was not affected by the intrusion and is monitoring the case. The Binance attack is the latest in a series of major intrusions against cryptocurrency exchanges. In 2025 alone, criminals stole approximately $2.9 billion in nearly 150 attacks, according to a survey by TRM Labs.
