# Anthropic bans Claude use for creating false search sources

Anthropic, developer of the AI assistant Claude, has published updated usage rules for the service. These rules explicitly prohibit the creation of websites using Claude that impersonate independent sources to influence search engine and AI responses. The new policy will take effect on November 12, 2026.

Indicators of misleading campaigns include fake accounts, organizations, media, and reviews, undisclosed payment for publications, and the spread of a single message across linked platforms. A separate point addresses the content of sources relied upon by search engines and generative models, including materials with false authorship claims or independence.

For SEO, SERM, and GERM specialists, the boundary of the prohibition is significant. Anthropic regulates the use of its own products, including Claude and its API. This does not mean that search engines have changed ranking algorithms or that there are mechanisms that automatically recognize such networks of sites.

Anthropic explains that restrictions existed previously but were scattered across sections on fraud, disinformation, and elections. Now, the company has consolidated them into a separate category covering not only political but also commercial campaigns. Thus, this is not about banning ordinary content automation, but about cases of intentional distortion of the source of content and the scale of dissemination.

The main conclusion for promotion through generative search is narrow: using Claude to simulate pseudo-independent confirmations is now explicitly named a violation of platform rules. How often and in what way the provider will identify such cases is not disclosed in the announcement.
