# AMD to acquire World Labs for 44,300,000,000 BRL

Advanced Micro Devices announced on Monday that it has reached an agreement to purchase World Labs, an artificial intelligence laboratory founded by researcher Fei-Fei Li. The total value of the transaction is 44,300,000,000 BRL, which corresponds to 8,200,000,000 US dollars. The payment for this acquisition will be made entirely through the issuance of shares from the chip manufacturer.

World Labs is headquartered in San Francisco, United States, and specializes in developing systems known as world models. These systems are capable of simulating three-dimensional environments. The technology developed by the laboratory can be applied to the creation of robots, vehicles, and other artificial intelligence applications that require interaction with the physical world. Advanced Micro Devices had previously invested in World Labs before finalizing the current acquisition agreement.

As part of the deal, Fei-Fei Li will assume the position of chief scientist at Advanced Micro Devices and will also serve as an executive vice president of the company. The researcher previously held a professorship at Stanford University and worked at Google, where she led research initiatives in the field of artificial intelligence. Her appointment occurs while Advanced Micro Devices seeks to strengthen its competitive position against Nvidia in the market for processors designed for artificial intelligence.

In a social media post made on Monday, Fei-Fei Li described Lisa Su as a great friend. She stated that the organization remains steadfast in its mission and is excited to continue building a world-leading frontier research organization that will endure for the coming decades. Advanced Micro Devices has stated that World Labs will remain separate from the chip manufacturing business until the transaction is completed, which is expected to happen by the end of this year.

The research conducted by World Labs on next-generation models may help Advanced Micro Devices anticipate the capabilities its artificial intelligence chips will need to offer in the coming years. This strategy allows the manufacturer to use the long-term research of World Labs to plan in advance for the requirements of its future artificial intelligence processors. This agreement represents the second largest acquisition in the history of Advanced Micro Devices. It is surpassed only by the purchase of Xilinx, which was completed in 2022 for approximately 50,000,000,000 US dollars, or about 270,500,000,000 BRL.

The deal is the largest move by Advanced Micro Devices to date in the market for mergers and acquisitions related to artificial intelligence. This transaction takes place at a time when major technology companies in the United States are increasing investments to attract researchers and engineers specialized in artificial intelligence, including through the purchase of companies still in relatively early stages. OpenAI purchased the artificial intelligence device startup io, created by Jony Ive, for approximately 6,400,000,000 US dollars, or about 34,600,000,000 BRL, last year. Nvidia spent a total of 33,000,000,000 US dollars, or about 178,200,000,000 BRL, on the artificial intelligence chip manufacturer Groq and the open-source platform Hugging Face. Meta paid 14,000,000,000 US dollars, or about 75,600,000,000 BRL, in 2025 for a minority stake in Scale AI.
