# 1Password Introduces Platform to Manage Credentials for AI Agents

1Password has announced a new platform called 1Password for Agents designed to allow artificial intelligence agents to access online accounts without being given the actual credentials.

AI agents are increasingly expected to perform actions on online services, such as managing administrative tasks or preparing expense reports, beyond simple data analysis or text generation. These operations typically require authentication, which previously meant either sharing a password within instructions, exposing credentials to risks of reuse or storage, or manually logging in, which limits automation.

Under the new system, an agent requests access upon encountering a login page and identifies itself to the manager using a unique digital key. The user then reviews and authorizes the request from their own device. The manager fills in the target site fields directly, ensuring the password is not transmitted to the AI model. This process separates the authorization to use an account from the knowledge of the credentials, and the mechanism also applies to one time codes.

The service is intended to work with several agents, including ChatGPT Work, Claude Duet, Grok Bot, Muse from Meta, dots, and Townie from Town. Some integrations are currently being deployed, while others are planned for a later stage. Browserbase, Perplexity, and Ramp are also among the actors involved in planned developments.

At launch, the offer is available at no extra cost to Individual and Family subscribers with accounts on 1Password.com. There are geographic restrictions, as accounts hosted on 1Password.eu and 1Password.ca are not yet eligible. Access methods and available functions vary based on the agent and its level of integration with the credential manager.
